Tax Related Scams and Phishing

IRS Collection Scam – The IRS does not communicate via e-mail so if you receive any e-mail claiming to be from the IRS, it is phishing. While the IRS does make collection calls, they are only in follow-up to correspondence you should have received through the mail. An IRS representative will give you their name and ID number, they will never demand payment over the phone, they will explain the nature of the tax you owe and they will also explain your appeals rights. And a legitimate IRS employee will already know your social security number so there is no reason for them to ask you for it.
